A longtime film buff and pop culture enthusiast, Kirk Baird has his dream job covering both as the Toledo Blade‘s pop culture editor and film critic. Kirk is an award-winning journalist whose weekly column Culture Shock was recently deemed one of the three best in Ohio’s largest newspapers by the Associated Press Society of Ohio; his Culture Shock blog that spawned the column also was named one of Ohio’s best by the Associated Press. Kirk reviews movies in a Friday morning segment for WWWM-FM, Star 105, in Toledo, and previously reviewed movies for Toledo’s CBS affiliate, WTOL-TV, Channel 11.
Before joining The Blade in July, 2008, he covered popular culture for the Las Vegas Sun, where he received Christmas cards annually from Robert Goulet and his wife, and once had Hunter S. Thompson call him back after an hour long phone interview to talk about things to do and places to go when Thompson returned to Las Vegas.
Kirk graduated from Texas Tech University in 1996 with a degree specializing in journalism, English, and mass communications.
